Initial thoughts on the new Pet Shop Boys album, Elysium

• I suppose you could say the overall sound is somewhere between Behaviour and a more successful version of Release. Maybe some bits of Nightlife.
• Perhaps they should have released an edit of “A face like that” as the first single?
• I wish they’d used the HappySad mix of “Winner” for the album and used the album version for the single.
• The Los Angeles-recorded backing singers and orchestra really push a few songs closer to show tunes than ever before. If that was even possible.
• “Ego music” is “How can you expect to be taken seriously” part 2.
• If they don’t open the new tour with “Ego music”, they’ve blown a great opportunity.
• “Requiem in denim and leopardskin” is “Being Boring” part 2.
• “Everything means something” is odd but great. It’s going to end up as my grower track.
• I have to say, this may be my least favorite Farrow design work for a Pet Shop Boys album.
• After all these years, it’s great that Pet Shop Boys clearly still give a shit.
