Obviously, the lesson may be, after reading a jillion opinions on the matter: whatever you were listening to when you were in the place Nathan Williams is now — that is what you hear.
OMG this actually works! I do hear The Senseless Things!!
I’m going to be very impressed if I listen to this and hear Autechre.
It’s all in there somewhere!
(Actually I was never that much into the senseless things but they come closest - I think the point being made’s a good one, that this is a friendly and approachable record designed to give listeners of many ages the warm punky fuzzies. I am listening to it for the first time and yes, it’s fine, I might even listen to it again! There’s a combination of simplicity and enormous eagerness to please which reminds me a little of pre-Britney pop too, stuff like Billie or B*Witched maybe.)
Just listenedd to some of this. I probably don’t have the context to offer any meaningful evaluation of this sort of thing. It sounds like the sort of vaguely snotty pop-punk I couldn’t get away from fast enough in the late ’80s/early ’90s, albeit with some beach music woven in and some clever effects. And it has that very American nasal vocal style that’s an instant turn-off for me, no matter what the music is doing.
